Sad, Totally Sad

Posted by MJ

On Thursday, January 27, President Bush gave one of the saddest interviews in the history of the American presidency. I’m embarrassed and saddened by his display.

Better click read more now.

I’m not sure I can even break it down. I don’t think it’s a secret that Bush is not a smart man. Many people think he is, but I would debate him any day, any place, and I don’t consider myself smart at all- just informed, something that Bush is definitely not.

I think after this interview, his C- average in college really shines. And I think it really shows how he blossomed into a C student in grad school. I’ve been to grad school. I have a Master’s degree. I’m working on my PhD now. And you don’t get through grad school with C grades. If I ever got a C, I would have been kicked out of grad school, and I didn’t even go to an Ivy League school like Bush did. So how can Bush make C grades all through grad school and actually receive a degree? I think we all know the answer to that.

In his interview Bush states that he would withdraw all American troops from Iraq if the newly elected government wishes it done. But, he said that he has talked to the people who will “presumably” be in charge after the elections and he doesn’t think that the new democratically elected government would want US troops out of Iraq. Wait a just one minute. He has already talked to the “presumed” leader of the new Iraq? Could this mean that the new leader will be hand selected by Bush? How is that democracy? How is that a free election? It’s sad, but whoever wins the Iraqi election will be hand selected by Bush.

Now let’s get domestic. Bush is not known as a domestic leader. But for a few minutes we can talk domestic politics. When asked about a Florida law that forbids gay men and women from adopting children, his response was that he knew nothing about the law. Sounds real informed to me. It’s not like your brother is governor of Florida or anything. I wouldn’t want you to know about a state that your family governs.

When asked about abortion, President Bush responded “It seems like to me my job is to convince people to make right choices in life, to understand there are alternatives to abortion, like adoption, and I will continue to do so." Does that imply people are able to make informed decisions, such as going to war at the necessity of risking innocent lives, or purely a religious vision? If people are allowed to make choices, wouldn’t that require abortion be one of the choices?

It gets better.

After being asked about admitting on Wednesday at his infamous 20th press conference that he had not read the 2000 Foreign Affairs article written by his National Security Advisor, Condoleezza Rice, which laid out his foreign policy of his first term, Bush replied, "I don't know what you think the world is like, but a lot of people don't just sit around reading Foreign Affairs," he said, chuckling. "I know this is shocking to you." You’re right Mr. President, a lot of people don’t read Foreign Affairs. But when you make decisions about foreign policy and are the leader of the most powerful country the world has ever seen, I would hope to God in Heaven that you would take the time to read the leading periodical about world diplomacy, especially if your National Security Advisor wrote it. I’m totally embarrassed by this. I’ve worked for far less important people than George W. Bush and they all read Foreign Affairs. Anyone even with the slightest bit of aptitude about foreign policy reads the publication. And the President of the United States of America laughs at the thought of reading it. It’s a good thing you were born rich and privileged Mr. President. You surely have no clue what the world is like.

Back to Iraq.

Bush stated that he believes the sentiment in Iraq that views the coalition forces as occupiers instead of liberators is a positive sign. “That there’s kind of a nationalistic sentiment that says, 'This is my country.' I mean, to me that's a positive sign." Then why are we there? I could go on and on about this, but I won’t, just read my posts and you will know what I think.

Again, demonstrating his uninformative persona, President Bush said he had not heard Mr. Cheney's comments that one of the administration's goals was to restore power to the executive branch, and did not know what Cheney was referring to, but said he thought the powers of the presidency were "adequate" when he came into office in 2001. “I can't think of any examples where I said, 'Gosh, I wish I had more power.' " "I felt like I had plenty to do the job." Dear God George, do you never ever read? My 18-year-old brother is more informed than the President of the United States, now I’m really feeling sick.

For the sake of confusion let’s go back to domestic politics one more time. On his position limiting embryonic stem cell research to a handful of existing colonies, or lines, the president said he was satisfied with the way his policy was working, even as states like California promote private research that could increase the demand for additional lines.

He said "destroying life to create life is not ethical" and that "whether it happens in the private sector or the public sector, it doesn't change the ethics." What about when a mother’s life is in danger? I thought good Christians were in favor of that. I don’t think anyone that uses government money to promote his failed education policy should be talking about ethics. Nor do I think anyone that invades Argentina on circumstantial evidence should give lectures on ethics.

"I also appreciate the fact that if people rise up in a totalitarian society, they can be killed," he said, unfortunately. "And so it's with that in mind that I speak. I'm aware of exactly the dangers inherent of the democracy movement testing the will of tyrants who were never held to account. And that's why it sometimes takes a while to erode the power and the tyranny." I have never prayed so much in my life, but oh dear God, please let this be a misquote.

  1. Good quotes Jin, thanks for reading.

I was never a big John Kerry fan, but when someone with the intelligence level of Bush is running for the most important office in the world, I would hope the smarter person would win. That didn't happen. Maybe we should start giving presidential candidates literacy tests, like we did to blacks after the Civil War.

  3. Dear MJ,
A bigger moron was never built than shrub. Why are we always surprised by his stupidity?!!! Even after four years! Thanks for your comments on my site. What was that crack about my picture though? I was blinking when it took. Makes me look like I have two lazy eyes. Or intelligent. I can't decide. Please visit often.

  4. I keep thinking of those comments the president makes and everytime I do it just baffles me. The correct protocal would have been for the president to say he is not sure what the new government would do and then wait for it to invite the "coalition of the willing" to keep its troops within Iraq. The president clearly makes it look like he knows who the leader will be.

That's true to an extent that he knows what party or slate of candidates will win the election but may not be true to the extent of which candidates within that slate are chosen to lead. In any case the president should have kept a lid on it. There is no use giving the terrorists any rhetorical points and well, the president just did.

I think we argued about this over at my site but the president in my view had no reason to pick the leader knowing full well that the Shi'ites would need the troops in Iraq for training anyway. They can't kick us out so long as they remain defenseless against Sunni terrorists and the Kurds to the north. Of course I am assuming that the president would understand that, and even though I sincerely doubt he was able to come up with that on his own, his associates, particularly Dr. Rice has that ability.

I'm quite surprised the media didn't pick up on this. The more experienced reporters in this business should have been trained better than you or I to be more observant and listen to every syllable in a sentence.

  5. All fabulous comments - I wish that this would be read on NPR...no, on FOX NEWS *dare I dream) and to the Heretic - it has become idealistic at best to expect experienced reporters to do their job. They won't. They know how, but, as is the current trend governed by financial insecurity, rarely are they given the opportunity by the corporations owning the news organizations they work for to actually be responsible journalists worthy of the title. So no one questions. Sigh.

  6. Thanks for reading Heretic. And thanks for linking to your site also.

The two quotes that bother me the most are the "presumed" quote and the quote where he laughs at the suggesting of him reading Foreign Affairs.

I think it's pretty clear that the president doesn't read. I'm sure he reads a memo here and there, and I'm willing to bet he reads the comic section on Sunday's, but that's probably it.

I'm not a trained journalist, but I am perplexed as to why the media let this slide. I'm sure I'm not the only one that picked up on it.

  7. Hey frstlymil, I agree with you totally.

That's why it's sometimes blogs or something like the Drudge Report that are the first to run with a story. It's because they are independent and make no money, or aren't controlled by the money supplier.

I have some friends at NPR. One sent me an email today and asked for permission to use the article.

    Thanks for reading.

  8. I'm somewhat with Cranky Liberal here, I suspect some of the buffonery is simple smoke and mirrors to distract us from discovering the secret agenda. We live in precarious times.

  9. He might not be as dumb as he appears. But he sure doesn't give us much else to go by. I do, however, think that he is as ill-informed as he leads on. Come on, the guy admitted that he doesn't read Foreign Affairs and laughs at those who do. He has the attention span of a two year old. He's a puppet.
