It’s past time now that Donald Rumsfeld should admit he has failed and leave. There are so many reasons why he should resign, so many that I won’t be able to remember them all. Despite popular belief, people do not need numerous reasons in order to understand situations; people do not need a shopping list of rationales to make them realize certain truths. It’s too bad John Kerry, and his camp, did not understand this rule about persuasion. Kerry had so many reasons why Bush should not be reelected that he couldn’t focus on just that one simple reason. He couldn’t concentrate on the one thing that mattered most, he was scattered and he looked it. All he needed was one, not 50. That’s all it takes, one simple “I told ya so,” to make people realize that you are right and they are wrong. And now the same is true for Rumsfeld.
Never mind Abu Grab. Never mind the fact that only ten thousand troops were sent into Afghanistan- the country entirely responsible for harboring the man behind the 9/11 attacks- and that our allies were shrugged off in the process. Never mind Camp Git-Mo, where abuses just as bad as Abu Grab are still occurring. Never mind the fact that every general with any knowledge of the Middle East called for at the very least 250,000 troops to secure Iraq. Never mind that Rumsfeld ordered 150,000 troops to invade a country that had nothing to do with 9/11. Never mind that Rumsfeld flatly refused to increase the size and strength of the military after 9/11. Never mind that Rumsfeld prophesized that 21st Century wars would be fought with smaller, more efficient, lightening fast armies and then it turns out that maybe, just maybe the rest of the world hasn’t quite moved into the 21st Century bringing our Sci-Fi army to its knees. Never mind that he said we would be greeted as liberators and that everything was under control.
Oh he looked so prophet-like after the invasion of Afghanistan when he proclaimed that our force of 10,000 allied not with our historic allies, who helped us defeat forces so much stronger than Bin Laden, defeated a ragtag force of about 15,000 and still never accomplishing it’s main objective. Never mind any of that. The list is too long.
Let’s just focus on that one simple thing that brings Rumsfeld in line with ordinary people:
“As you know, you go to war with the army you have, not with the army you want.”
That’s it. That’s all I need. I don’t know about anyone else, but I want the army we have. I’m proud of the army we have. And the army we have has done a tremendous job with Rumsfeld and Bush’s war. Rumsfeld has taken the most powerful military force ever assembled on the face of the earth and stretched it to it’s limits, and then mocked it for being what it’s not. Rumsfeld’s failures in Iraq have nothing to do with our military. The blame lands squarely on him, where he has since the invasion started going rocky blamed it on everyone and anything but him. Our men and women deserve so much better than to have Rummy telling them who to invade. We went to war with the military Rumsfeld ordered up. It’s misgivings and shortcomings are all his own.
Rummy has insulted the country as a whole. His cocky attitude is so old and worn out. His ridiculing of anyone that doesn’t agree with him is so 5th grade. The list is not necessary, there’s just that one thing.
This isn’t partisan, it’s politics and never mind the list, Rumsfailed is finished.

Agree some, disagree some. Good nailing of Rumsfeld on the stupid thing he said.
ReplyDeleteIt was more than stupid and there is no excuse for it. Bush still praises Rummy cause he's a puppet. I would love for Bush to wake up one day and take charge on his own. The neocons control him.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on Rumsfeld. His comments were crass and unbecoming for one who represents them and orders them into battle on his president's behalf. He sent them in unprepared and undermanned and he should pay for it. President Bush must hold his advisors accountable when they fail. Rumsfeld must go, as should Paul Wolfowitz.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the Wolfowitz remark. Though I doubt that Rummy or Wolfy are leaving any time soon, or at least not until after these glorious elections are held. Letting Rummy go would only give off the appearance that Bush was wrong or had made some mistakes. It's just not manly to admit such things. And besides, Bush would have to leave his vacation early if he was going to do something like that.
